1. "The Daily Prayer" as "The Beloved's Prayer"
A few years ago, I sensed God was urging me to pray The Daily Prayer every day. At first, I found this to be difficult. I soon discovered that even though I had grown up in Christianity, I did not understand what the prayer meant at all. And often as I would force myself to pray it, I would have to fight extreme sleepiness even though I had just had a good night's sleep. Other times, I could hardly make my mouth form the words. I pressed on, but it felt mechanical, and my mind insisted on wandering...it seemed like it took forever to get through it. In an attempt at understanding, I looked up every Scripture reference hoping to find some spark of life, yet still the prayer was exhausting and dead to me. But stronger still, was the hunch that I was being blocked from the richness of the prayer, so I forced myself to stay with it and I pressed on day after day
Finally, I started asking God, "What does this mean? What do you want me to know here?" And bit by bit He started to show me. Piece by piece He opened the eyes of my understanding. And as each part came alive to me I scribbled notes in my book on the pages of the prayer, so that I wouldn't lose what God had just shown me. One day, I realized I was praying it with joy and strength and entering into the depth of what it truly meant for me. It was now something I looked forward to everyday. After a few months, I realized that I had it memorized and could pray through all of it (or even just a random phrase from it) anywhere I was (at a stoplight, while washing dishes...etc.) anywhere I was battling and needing to remember who I was in Christ,or what God's heart toward me was.
I love The Daily Prayer and pray it often still. It is a friend and has played a significant part in my journey.
This past summer, as part of that journey, I sensed God was wanting me to write my own freedom fighting prayer...to find my own voice. I was a little daunted by the task, but I asked God to give me the words, and in the process He ministered great healing to my heart.
I offer The Beloved's Prayer below, not to replace The Daily Prayer, but to encourage you to dive into The Daily Prayer if you haven't yet--to encourage you to press past any fog that you may encounter there. It is a treasure. Through it, God took me deeper into who I am in Him, and gave me my own words to express my love and freedom in Him.
Dear Yeshua, I come to you today to agree with you about all that you see in me and long for me to be. I come to you today to reclaim my heart, to join you in your rescue and restoration of it. To stand my ground against the enemy's plans to harm it and to claim all that is rightfully mine that you won for me through your complete work on the cross, in your resurrection and in the fullness of your ascension. I come to clear my vision, to see the view from Mount Zion, to see things as you see them, for I am indeed seated in the heavenlies with you.
Beloved Father, I come to you asking for forgiveness for the ways I have not counted on your love, for the ways I have hurt your heart, hurt the kingdom and hurt those you love. Reveal those things to me, help me to see them as you see them so that I may run from the ways of death and embrace the way of love and life instead. Forgive me for the glory I have caused you to miss. Search me by your Spirit. Cleanse me by your Son's blood. Take pity on me; remember my frame of dust, my struggle with the flesh and have mercy on me and heal me. Bring me to wholeness. I crucify my flesh and impale it to Christ's cross, and declare myself hidden with Christ in God. I surrender to the Spirit's healing and restorative work on my behalf. I rest in the knowledge of your love for me and your promise of working all things out for me. I stand upright, robed in righteousness receiving your full pardon and forgiveness. I renounce the Lie of Nothingness-that nothing good is happening and that all will end badly. I make no agreements with it. I choose to walk instead in the confidence that you are actively working all things together for good on my behalf. I choose to walk in step with you, Lord, and to not run ahead and create my own light.
I put on the full armor of God. The armor you wear, God of the Angel Armies is armor fit for me as well. I put on your truth, may it speak louder than any lie. I put on your righteousness, knowing that it is mine in Christ. I put on your salvation, knowing that I have been saved, I am being saved and I will be fully saved. I raise up faith as a canopy of protection for me, choosing to believe that you are good no matter what it may look like at any given moment. I choose to wield your Word as a powerful weapon against every lie launched against me. I choose to pray in the Spirit. And I choose to walk along side you in preparing and bringing the good news that brings peace. I choose to wear the crowns you gave mankind at creation that were lost to us, but have now been regained through Christ--the crowns of glory, dominion and fruitfulness.
Jehovah, God of the Angel Armies, I ask you to send out battalions of your warrior angels to war and to work on my behalf. May they guard me and all within my domain this day. Lord, show me by your Spirit any points of entry, any weak places the enemy may use to gain entrance. Show me any agreements I have made with the darkness, any lies I have been naive in believing, any lies lodged deeply within me from my past. Bring those lies to the surface, speak your sentences of truth and love to every place. Lord, I come under your covenant promise that I will not be destroyed and I believe that your covenant promise is a hiding place of protection for me. Your rainbow banner over me is love. I bring my family and all that are within my domain under your banner of love this day.
Thank you for your great love, Trinity. If you are for me, who can be against me? And you are for me, finishing the beautiful work you started in me. So I praise you, Great Fellowship of Hearts for your care and complete provision for me. Thank you for inviting me to dine with you at your table of delights. Thank you for inviting me to dance and to play. Thank you for inviting me to war and to rule and extend your domain. Holy Spirit, increase my longing for my Groom. Make me desperately hungry and thirsty for the Living Word. Increase my ability to hear your voice and see your hand. Open the eyes of my heart. Prompt my heart to praise and adoration in the moments of this day. Take me to the next step. Protect me in the battle. Heighten my awareness of evil. Keep my feet from slipping. Bring me into the fullness of the knowledge of your great love. And as you will, bring me into my glory so that I might most beautifully glorify you. Open the windows of heaven and bless me indeed.
Thank you that your hand of favor rests upon my head. Thank you that you are within me, here in the moments, now and for always. Thank you that you have blessed me with all of the blessings of the heavenly realm in Christ and that I can walk in confidence of your good heart toward me. I love you, LORD, for I am yours and you are mine. These things I ask Father, Son and Holy Spirit with the full backing and authority of Yeshua's name.

2. "The Lord's Prayer" through the Eyes of a Child
The Lord's Prayer
(As seen through the eyes of a child)
Several years ago, after attending Wild at Heart Bootcamp where God rescued my heart, I began to ask Him to "teach me to pray". As the first disciples in their (spiritual) infancy had asked, "...Lord, teach us to pray" (Luke 11:1).
It seems my entire adult life I have been searching for that prayer that would forever hook me into the Father, as Jesus seemed to always be connected. I attended a Sunday school class one time that dealt with this and we got into the issue of "worship", and position of body and heart, and the right words to say. The "Daily Prayer" that John (Eldredge) and his team came up with, which they compiled from past saints, and they got from others over the years, is a very effective prayer, but with my young heart, it still seemed a bit advanced. I listened to Ransomed Heart Ministries CD series on prayer (The Hope of Prayer) and even there, John says that much of that message is for the more mature.
So what I was searching for was that prayer, or way of praying, that a young heart could understand, and really connect to God and commune with Him, as Jesus' life so well demonstrated. During my walks with God around our local lake, He began to speak to my heart about those first disciples, and how he taught them to pray. First, he reminded me that these men (and women) were very young in this message, much as I am now. So when he began to teach them to pray, what the modern church now calls "The Lord's Prayer" he purposely kept it uncomplicated and addressed the needs of these children.
Over the centuries "The Lord's Prayer" has been used by some as a ritualistic prayer, an incantation at times to get God's attention or for repentance. Most modern churches look at the "The Lord's Prayer" as a prayer of unity. What God showed me about this prayer not only answered my desire to "learn to pray", but revealed a new depth of a Father's heart that I had never known.
After revealing that the first disciples were "young" at heart, questions arose then about what it was that they needed and wanted to talk to God about at that stage of their heart. I was reminded of what every child needs, what our children need before they can go out on their own; room, board, safety. They need nurturing (board): physical, mental, spiritual food. They need cover over them (room), a place that they belong to, an identity; "I am so-an-so(s) son who lives at a specific address. That is my home, it is where I belong." And, they need protection (safety). To be kept secure from outside dangers, spiritually secure from evil. So, children have a need for "identity", "nurturing", and "security". Is this not what we provide our children?
After this revelation, God showed me how Jesus' words in His prayer went to the heart of those he was teaching. From Matthew 6:9-13:
(Matthew 6:9-10): "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Is this not our identity? Jesus tells his disciples, that they are their Father's kids, and they have a home, and they are identified with him. "Daddy, you are awesome, bigger than any dad anywhere and I am yours and want to live in your house and be a part of your family and do what you say!" As His children our hearts are circumcised; we are "branded" with His name, we are "of" His kingdom, we live at #1 North Heavens Gate, we are sons and daughters of the "Most High". If I get lost, I carry a card (my heart) that tells everyone where I live, who I am, who my parents (Trinity) are, my identity.
(Matthew 6:11-12): "Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."
Do we not need to be fed, nurtured? And is this not a basic need for our children? Here Jesus is simply asking the Father to help them to grow. We need daily physical, mental, and spiritual food. It is a growth process, this life we are given. And, we need open channels for this nurturing to occur. Un-forgiveness is like shutting off the water flow of a reservoir. If we don’t forgive, and allow for the free and open flow of water, then our Father can not nurture us. "Daddy, give me what I need for life this day, and I will share this with others."
(Matthew 6:13): "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
Do we not protect our children from evil, all outside forces that would rob them of their security with us? We live in a kingdom and life that is opposed. Evil hates who we are in God, hates the life sustaining growth, hates everything about God and his kids. We are under attack, and we need protected. As we mature, we learn to fight alongside our Father, but we must first know that we are protected by Him. None of us are going to draw our swords unless we are under the protection of our King, our Father. We need this place of security in which to be able to understand our true identity, and a safe place to grow up. "Daddy, protect me from all that would take away my identity and life with you."
As a beloved child of God I need the simplicity of this prayer. When I now pray, I see these elements (identity, nurturing, and security) and it has opened a way to talk to my Father. "Father, I am yours, I belong to you. Grant me all that I need to grow as your child and I will give freely that which you have given me. Protect me always, even as I begin to fight along side you."
When praying with and for others, these same simple truths that Jesus gave his first disciples can be applied. The "Daily Prayer" that RHM uses now makes much more sense to me because it holds these simple truths throughout the prayer. And "The Hope of Prayer" series (from www.ransomedheart.com) also is much easier to follow and comprehend.
Before Jesus started his ministry, He was sent to the desert for testing. What we find there are these same elements. Jesus was tempted to get his "nurturing" from Satan (Luke 4:3-4). His "identity" was questioned (Luke 4:5-8). And Jesus was tempted to put his security in the hands of Satan (Luke 4:9-12).
A third way God showed me these simple truths was in the form of His identity with the Trinity. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are always pointing to the Father, our true identity. The Holy Spirit is constantly nurturing us, physically, mentally, and spiritually. And, Jesus, our King, gave his life to rescue us and insure our security from evil.
Jesus did not go into some "theological" debate and a long winded prayer when his disciples asked Him, "Lord, teach us to pray". He kept it at the level a child could understand with the power of any king or scholar with years of study.
(Matthew 11:25) Jesus said: "I praise you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children."
(Luke 18:15) Jesus said: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth; any who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
